英語を話している時、言葉に詰まると会話に間ができますが、この間についてどうするのが一番上品であるのか？、という疑問です。



これを彼女に聞いてみたくなったのも、講師の先生が非常に上品で洗練された初老の女性だったから。
そういった方の意見を是非聞いてみたかったのです。




今まで、英会話や英語に関する本を読んだり、英会話学校の先生から聞いたりした情報によると、これには諸説あるようで、
主に、


①　アメリカ人は会話の間を嫌うため、『You know』、『I mean』、『Let me see』、『Uh・・・』など、何も話さないより言った方が良い。



② ネイティブであってもそうでなくても、上記の言葉を会話に多用するのは聞き苦しいため、言わない方が良い。
言うくらいなら、沈黙の方が望ましい。


という２つの意見があります。




どちらが大人の女性として望ましいのか、また、ほかに対策はあるのかが知りたかったため聞いてみました。



彼女の回答によれば、①はダメだそうで、
私の友達でも、すぐに『You know』という方がいますが、彼女と話していると非常にイライラします。『I don’t know!』って言いたくなります。」
とのこと。



私も以前、英会話教室の男性で、アメリカ帰りだか何だか知りませんが、会話の半分近くが『You know』と言っている人がいて、彼の会話を聞いているとイラっときた思い出があります。やはり、これはアメリカ人にとっても同じく不愉快なそうです^^；





では、どうすればいいのか？？？



先生曰く、



“Excuse me for pausing.”


“I can’t think of right words right now.”


“I’m thinking about how to say that.”



というのが良い、とのことでした。



これまで、この件については英会話教室の20代そこそこの先生に聞いて①を薦められ、なんとなく納得いかず、「知的な英語、好かれる英語」の著者（アメリカ生活25年）は②を薦め、それも腑に落ちず、どうすれば良いのか悩ましいところだったのですが、洗練された大人の女性として尊敬できるネイティブの方に、非常に参考になる答えをいただいてスッキリしました☆
